Bacterial cultures operation efficiency in clearing of water from Phenolum and its chlorinated derivative

The institute of biology URC RAS presents a Collection of microorganisms-destructors for decomposition of phenolum and its chlorinated derivative. The collection is usable for conversion of contaminants in water and soil environment.

The compounds, containing halogens in their composition are one of the largest groups of environment contaminants. The representatives of this group get into environment directly or indirectly, since medical drugs, herbicides, solvents, lacquers, stains, fire-extinguishers contain them. It is known, that the halogenated compounds tend to accumulate and gradually expand over food chains. Therefore irreversible changes of biological systems in zones subjected to their impact, happen slowly. It is possible to say, that the presence of halogenorganic compounds in environment is like that of a delay-action mine.

The main method of struggle with halogenorganic compounds contamination now u burning of remainds, accumulated as a result of production proceses, and also burning or cultivation of contaminated soils by solvents. This method is too expensive: 1t. of soil burning costs approximately about 2000 canadian dollars. Besides, the methods used have essential disadvantages. Niether method eliminates secondary pollution of the environment by products of incomplete waste burning (dioxins). Application of these methods can not solve the problem of large volumes contaminations conversion.

Usage of biological technologies is considered to be more perspective. Speed and efficiency of dangerous substances conversion processes will be determined in this case by properties and activity of microorganisms-destructors. According to experts estimation microbialogical way is approximately 50 times cheaper than standard methods. Usage of microorganisms allows to solve the problem of secondary contamination, since destruction of xenobiotics can be conducted without accumulation of injurious or toxic substances. Besides, by using special cultures it is possible to neutralize large volumes of contaminants.
